The Equestrian Order of Pope St. Gregory the Great (I) was founded in 1831 by Pope Gregory XVI to award to those who have made substantial contributions to the Catholic Church. Gregory XVI (r. 1831-1846) was one of the most traditional popes of the last several centuries, ranking with Pope St. Pius V and Pope St. Pius X in that regard.
