The U.S. birth rate fell 4% last year, the largest single-year decrease in nearly 50 years, according to a government report being released Wednesday. The rate dropped for moms of every major race and ethnicity, and in nearly every age group, falling to the lowest point since federal health officials started tracking it more than a century ago. The San Manuel Band of Mission Indians is expected to acquire the 700-room Palms for $650 million from Red Rock Resorts later this year, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported. Veteran broadcast journalist Bob Abernethy, who founded the PBS program “Religion & Ethics NewsWeekly,” has died at the age of 93. He died on Sunday (May 2) in Brunswick, Maine, his daughter Jane Montgomery Abernethy announced in a Facebook post. She said her father died of natural causes. MORE
LOS ANGELES (ChurchMilitant.com) (warning: some explicit content) – A new lawsuit accuses California Cdl. Roger Mahony of sexually abusing a male minor. It is the first such lawsuit ever brought against the former archbishop of Los Angeles. MORE
The Florida Legislature has completed a bill that blocks any/all local municipalities from continuing “emergency use COVID orders” that restricts business and individual freedom. The law goes into effect on July 1st, and Governor Ron DeSantis signed the bill today in St. Petersburg. To speed up the process, the Governor also announced he was using his executive office to suspend all local ordinances and restrictions effective immediately.
In other words, you are free to take whatever precautions you deem personally necessary but all local restrictions are blocked. VIDEO
Celebrations for The Day of the Discovery of the Holy Cross La Santa Cruz on May 3rd ceased in all other countries of the world when Pope John XXIII removed the feast day from the Catholic liturgical calendars in 1960. The Pope was planning to focus attention on the celebration of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross on September 14. MORE
