A veteran Los Angeles police sergeant is suing the city claiming he was discriminated against because of his Wiccan religion, weeks after his wife filed a similar lawsuit. Sgt. A.J. A Toronto-area father has won the right to have his son exempted from all religious programs at a local Roman Catholic high school, a ruling that could set a precedent across Ontario. A three-member panel of the Ontario divisional court ruled Oliver Erazo’s son Jonathan should not have to attend any religious liturgies or retreats at Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School in Brampton under provisions in the provincial Education Act. MORE

Argentina’s President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner became the godmother of a lesbian couple’s baby girl in a Roman Catholic ceremony on Saturday – though the Church opposes gay marriage.  Baby Umma Azul is just over 2 months old and was baptized as mothers Carina Villarroel and Soledad Ortiz, who were married last year, looked on. African Christians will be killed if the Church of England accepts gay marriage, the archbishop of Canterbury has suggested. Speaking on an LBC phone in, Justin Welby said he had stood by a mass grave in Nigeria of 330 Christians who had been massacred by neighbours who had justified the atrocity by saying: “If we leave a Christian community here we will all be made to become homosexual and so we will kill all the Christians.” MORE

A delegation of nine American prelates led by Cardinal Sean P. O’Malley of Boston (pictured) traveled to Nogales, Ariz., to celebrate a Mass at the United States/Mexican border, to lay a wreath at the border commemorating the estimated 6,000 people who have died trying to make the crossing, and to stage a news conference urging reform of what they called a “broken system.”  MORE

Mark your calendars, sky watchers: In one week a total lunar eclipse will turn the moon an eerie shade of red. On April 15, at 1:58 a.m., the moon will move into Earth’s shadow. The full lunar eclipse—when the entirety of the moon is shaded by Earth—begins just over an hour later at 3:07 a.m. and lasts until 4:25 a.m. The eclipse will be visible across almost the entire continental United States, most of Canada and Central America and parts of South America. MORE
