More Americans have died from gunshots in the last 50 years than in all of the wars in American history.

Since 1968, more than 1.5 million Americans have died in gun-related incidents, according to data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. By comparison, approximately 1.2 million service members have been killed in every war in U.S. history, according to estimates from the Department of Veterans Affairs and iCasualties.org, a website that maintains an ongoing database of casualties from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Gov. Jerry Brown signed a bill Friday that lowers from a felony to a misdemeanor the crime of knowingly exposing a sexual partner to HIVwithout disclosing the infection.

Californians who don’t identify as male or female will soon be able to identify as a third gender on state documents.

Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown signed a bill titled the “Gender Recognition Act” Sunday night allowing state residents to identify as “non-binary” on driver’s licenses and birth certificates, The Sacramento Bee reported. MORE

Students who attended for-profit colleges were twice as likely or more to default on their loans than students who attended public schools, according to a federal study published Thursday.

The report by the National Center for Education Statistics looks at students who began their undergraduate education in 2003 and defaulted on at least one loan over the next 12 years. Fifty-two percent of the students who attended for-profit schools defaulted on their loan. That’s compared with 17 percent for those who attended a four-year public institution and 26 percent at community college. MORE
