Air Force Blames Its Serious Pilot Shortage On Lawmakers

2783337-840x420Secretary of the Air Force Deborah Lee James said legislators on Capitol Hill, locked in partisan gridlock, shoulder part of the blame.

The U.S. Air Force faces a shortfall of 700 fighter pilots by the end of the year and as many as 1,000 pilots within a few years, Air Force officials said Wednesday.

“It is a crisis,” said Gen. David Goldfein, the Air Force chief of staff. “Air superiority is not an American birthright. It’s actually something you have to fight for and maintain.” MORE

The chewing motion gets blood flowing to the head, the researchers suggest, where it improves memory, according to how quickly a test-taker can recall information in the lab. The effect only lasted a few minutes, but researchers think chewing gum before a test could give students an advantage in some ways. MORE

Ricci Martin, son of Dean, passes away

09martin-obit-blog427-v2Ricci Martin, the youngest son of Dean Martin, who performed a tribute show to his father and wrote a memoir about growing up in Beverly Hills, died on Wednesday at his home in Kamas, Utah. He was 62.

His family announced his death, saying the cause had not been determined.

In the 1970s, Mr. Martin released a single, “Stop, Look Around,” and an album, “Beached,” produced by Carl Wilson of the Beach Boys. MORE

L.A. area’s air quality the deadliest in the nation

LAAs Southern California continues to struggle through this summer’s unrelenting smog, a study released Wednesday, Aug. 10, gives a stark reminder of why air quality matters.

Researchers believe that hundreds of people die each year because of Southern California’s poor air quality. Pollution levels routinely exceed the levels deemed safe by health professionals.

In the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Glendale area, about 1,341 people are estimated to die each year because of bad air. MORE

16 die in Portugal forest fires

firessFire crews are still struggling to bring wildfires in the southern Algarve tourist region under control today, officials have said.

The death toll from two weeks of record blazes rose to 16 when a firefighter, who had been burned in a forest fire in central Portugal last week, died of his injuries late Wednesday night.

Almost 500 firefighters, working with 139 fire trucks and helped by 240 soldiers, contained most of the fires in the Algarve region that had raced for five days through a hilly inland area of dense forest. MORE
