Pope Francis has denounced what he calls the “great powers” of the world for failing to act when there was intelligence indicating Jews, Christians, homosexuals and others were being transported to death camps in Europe during World War II.
He also decried “how many Christians suffered” and died in gulags later in Russia under the Stalin dictatorship.
The pope’s harsh assessments came in impromptu remarks during his visit to Turin, northern Italy, when he told young people he understands how they find it hard to trust the world. MORE

California bounces back as No. 7 economy in world
After taking a significant recession-era hit, California’s economy has bounced back up to the seventh largest in the world as the state’s gross domestic product reached $2.3 trillion in 2014, according to figures released Wednesday by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis.

One new case of H5N2 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) has been confirmed in the US, ending an eight-day hiatus of new detections.
The newly confirmed outbreak brings the total number of detections in the US to 223, affecting 48,091,293 birds. Iowa has now reached 75 detections in total, with 31,723,300 birds affected.MORE

Tomorrow is the scheduled release date for Francis’ newest encyclical. The often delayed encyclical had a draft copy leaked to the press. Since it is a ‘Jubilee Year of Mercy’, Francis the humble decided to demonstrate his Chesed of Gevurah and relieved Sandro Magister, the journalist who leaked the encyclical, of his 41 year old press credentials to the Holy See.
