Irving Berlin, one of the most famous songwriters in American history, was born Israel Baline in Western Siberia, in what is now part of the Russian Federation. Berlin’s daughter, Mary Ellin Berlin Barrett, writes in her book, Irving Berlin, a Daughter’s Memoir (1994) that her sister researched the Baline family origins. While the family originated in what is now Belarus, Irving was almost certainly born in Western Siberia, where his father, an itinerant cantor, had sought work. At least two people were killed as a major storm pummeled the Pacific northwest and California with heavy rain and high winds, causing houses to be swallowed up by the ocean in Washington as power was knocked out to tens of thousands of homes.

In Oregon the 80mph winds proved deadly, with a teenage boy killed when a large tree fell on the vehicle he was travelling in, causing it to swerve and hit a tree. A homeless man was also killed by a falling tree. MORE

A new ‘Islamic doll’ with no facial features has been launched in Britain. The ‘Deeni Doll’ has no eyes, nose or mouth whatsoever in a bid to comply with Islamic rules governing the depiction of faces.
