The Equestrian Order of Pope St. Gregory the Great (I) was founded in 1831 by Pope Gregory XVI to award to those who have made substantial contributions to the Catholic Church. Gregory XVI (r. 1831-1846) was one of the most traditional popes of the last several centuries, ranking with Pope St. Pius V and Pope St. Pius X in that regard. Ron Lowe’s letter calling the Republican Party religious fundamentalists and accusing them of “sliding into Nazi mentality in the name of God and Country,” shows ignorance of the facts. God and Hitler had nothing in common. The slogan was “One people, one Country, One leader.”
