Whether Jews should only date and marry other Jews is not a new question, but it’s one that has come into stark relief in recent weeks.
In two separate instances in December, groups within Conservative Judaism — the second-largest movement of American Jews — appeared to challenge some of their own rules that discourage interfaith dating and matrimony: MORE
Many of these rare pictures of the imperial Romanov family were taken by head of the family and Russia’s last tsar himself, Nicholas II. An insatiable photographer, the tsar took great care of his pictures, filing them carefully in numerous albums. He passed down his love for photography to Maria, his third daughter, who was responsible for coloring most of the pictures.
Within a year of the last pictures, the Russian Revolution took place. The tsar was forced to abdicate and the family was exiled. In Yekaterinburg on July 17, 1918, they were shot on Lenin’s orders. MORE
More earthquakes strike north Texas shaking going on. The U.S. Geological Survey has confirmed a Thursday afternoon temblor near Midlothian. The quake measured a 2.7 magnitude. There are reports of the movement also being felt in Mansfield. The earthquake, that happened at 2:12 in the afternoon, measured at a depth of five kilometers. There are no reports of damage. MORE
Just north of here, on the far side of the impenetrable Vatnajokull ice sheet, lava is spewing from a crack in the earth on the flanks of Bardarbunga, one of Iceland’s largest volcanoes. By volcanologists’ standards, it is a peaceful eruption, the lava merely spreading across the landscape as gases bubble out of it. Cardinal Raymond Burke, a senior American churchman in Rome who has been one of the most outspoken critics of Pope Francis’ push for reform, is roiling the waters yet again, this time arguing that the Catholic Church has become too “feminized.”
Burke, who was recently demoted from the Vatican’s highest court to a ceremonial philanthropic post, also pointed to the introduction of altar girls for why fewer men are joining the priesthood. MORE

In the last few years a formerly unknown phenomenon has appeared on Lake Michigan, huge “ice balls”. This should be perplexing enough, but what about when the “ice balls” appear in lake water that is 40 degrees or above? Welcome to the world of chemical/biological ice nucleation. Artificial nucleating agents form the nucleus of ice around which the “balls” form. Last year on Lake Michigan volumes of ice were still floating around while people were sunbathing on beaches with 85 degree temperatures. MORE
A private collector paid an unusually high price for a photograph taken by Peter Lik at Arizona’s Antelope Canyon.
Without surprise, the the milk-toast newscasters laugh and giggle and they explain it away as smoke. However, there’s an obvious figure in the image, head, torso, almost like Michelangelo’s ‘David.’ Left image is Michelangelo’s ‘David’ created in a photolab, the right image is the 6.5 million dollar phantom photo. Come to think about it, it does look like a phantom staring straight at the photographer. MORE
Emergency warnings remain in place for parts of South Australia as fire fighters battle out-of-control blazes at Sampson Flat and Tantanoola.

Nine earthquakes, three of them with a 3-point magnitude or greater, rocked North Texas Tuesday into early Wednesday, knocking items off walls, causing cracks to appear in ceilings and generally rattling nerves across the region.
