A U.S. Pew Research Center study conducted in mid July 2020 and released on October 9, 2020, found that 86 per cent of 3,700 adults surveyed believe that the Chinese Virus presents a lesson for mankind. 35 per cent of the 3,700 respondents believe that the Chinese Virus pandemic is a lesson sent by God, which include the following warnings:
- Mankind must repent of arrogance and contempt of God.
- Mankind must pray more, and harder.
- Mankind must come to know God better.
- Mankind must change his sinful ways.
- Mankind must show more gratitude for all God’s blessings.
On the other hand, 26 per cent of the respondents saw no lesson to be learned, or were avowed atheists. 37 per cent saw only non-religious lessons, citing politics, environmentalism, or emotionalism of various sorts. [Some information for this Commentary was contributed by the Pew Research Center.]
True Catholics, the Pew survey indicates that most U.S. adults are so irreligious that even a major disaster will not serve to turn most adults to God. On the whole, they are arrogant and in contempt of God, pray infrequently, are ignorant of God, and are ingrates toward God’s blessings. Not a pretty picture.
