Why smart people are better off with fewer friends

Texas-Spring-BreakThey use what they call “the savanna theory of happiness” to explain two main findings from an analysis of a large national survey (15,000 respondents) of adults aged 18 to 28.

First, they find that people who live in more densely populated areas tend to report less satisfaction with their life overall. “The higher the population density of the immediate environment, the less happy” the survey respondents said they were. Second, they find that the more social interactions with close friends a person has, the greater their self-reported happiness.

But there was one big exception. For more intelligent people, these correlations were diminished or even reversed. MORE

Yet fewer Americans pray or believe in God than ever before, according to a new study in the journal Sage Open. MORE

Georgia Could Lose Super Bowls If Antigay Bill Signed

GettyImages-159773922.0As Republican Gov. Nathan Deal considers “religious freedom” legislation that would open the door to businesses denying service to LGBT people, the National Football League issued a statement saying Atlanta could lose the chance to host a Super Bowl.

The statement was issued to the The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and came from league spokesman Brian McCarthy:

“NFL policies emphasize tolerance and inclusiveness, and prohibit discrimination based on age, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, or any other improper standard. Whether the laws and regulations of a state and local community are consistent with these policies would be one of many factors NFL owners may use to evaluate potential Super Bowl host sites.” MORE
