Tim Cook unveiled the long-anticipated Apple Watch yesterday.  The CEO called the device “a comprehensive health and fitness companion.”  It will also display boarding passes in airports, show a live feed of a person’s home and garage door, and run most of the iPhoneapps.  One hotel company plans to use it as a room key.  According to Cook, battery life will be 18 hours with regular use; costs range from $349 to $10,000, which includes an 18-karat gold body. Warmer temperatures are raising the fear of flooding in parts of Ohio, with the Ohio River expected to crest nearly six feet over flood stage Sunday as melting snow and ice swell the waterway.

Flood warnings were in place all along the Ohio River on the state’s southern border, from Cincinnati to Portsmouth, and were expected to remain in place through Wednesday, the National Weather Service said. MORE

A winter heat wave continued across Southern California on Wednesday, setting or tying record temperatures for the day and creating extreme fire conditions across parched wildland areas.

Point Mugu Naval Air Station, Fullerton and Camp Pendleton each topped out at 90 degrees, which were the highest temperatures in the nation, according to the National Weather Service. MORE

Costa Rica’s Turrialba volcano belched a column of gas and ash up to 3,280 feet (1 km) into the air on Thursday in its most powerful eruption in two decades, and local authorities started to evacuate residents from the surrounding area.

Four explosions emanated from the volcano in central Costa Rica on Thursday, and ash reached parts of the capital San Jose some 30 miles (50 km) away, where the airport was closed. It was the volcano’s strongest eruption since 1996. MORE

Teams of rescue workers were on Saturday night racing to reach the remote Pacific island chain of Vanuatu, which has been devastated by one of the most powerful cyclones ever recorded. More than 40 people are reported to have been killed so far after winds reaching 200mph destroyed homes, roads, power supplies and harbours. While more than 70 percent of U.S. states now allow same-sex marriage, the waves of change have yet to reach America’s far-flung and socially conservative territories in the Caribbean and Pacific.

Of the five territories, only Puerto Rico has faced a lawsuit seeking the right for gay couples to wed, and a federal judge there — bucking the trend in federal courts on the mainland — rejected the suit. That case is under appeal before the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston. MORE

Prayers were said at churches across India Sunday for an elderly nun who was gang-raped at a convent in an attack that has intensified anger over sexual violence and fuelled fears among beleaguered Christians.

The assault on the 71-year-old is the latest in a string of high-profile rapes in India and comes amid a spate of attacks on churches that prompted Hindu nationalist Prime Minister Narendra Modi to promise a crackdown on religious violence. MORE
