Ever since Satan deceived Eve to eat of the forbidden fruit under the pretext of becoming as gods (Gensis 3:5, “You shall be as gods knowing good and evil.”) Man has been struggling to find himself until Jesus Christ came into this world to give him back his spiritual rebirth. In going back to God’s original plan (Genesis 1:26, “Let us make man in Our image and likeness.”) What Eve didn’t realize was that she and Adam were already created as gods, but of the imperfect state. St. Thomas writes (Summa III, 37), “that the Son of God became man, but in order to make us, as it were, gods by His grace.” God has descended to the manger that all men may rise toward divinity.

In His creation of man God wished man to have the same gifts that He had, that of having free will, knowing that once we had this free will man would, as the Angels, choose to be obedient or disobedient. Hence, freewill is the the foundation for truth and error, good and evil, heaven and hell. Our Lord says (John 10:33), “Is it not written in your law: I said you are gods?” He refers to the Psalms of David (81:6): “I have said: You are gods and all of you the sons of the most High.” But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ: and the head of the woman is man: and the head of Christ is God. 1 Corin. 11:3.

We find today in Society the diminishing respect for man’s proper place in the world where man has been placed on the same level as the animals. This of course affects the role of the father and mother in the family, completely opposed to what God established. I noticed even among Catholics that the demeaning respect for human beings is especially prevelant when, even from the pulpit, man is compared to being no better than animals—although man’s actions can easily become worse than any animal,

As we look down the ages we can see at least the Caesars were right in their role as emperors to expect honor as gods. The Jews only claimed Caesar when they wished to have the perfect God-Man killed by proclaiming, “ We have no King but Caesar.”

Perhaps as we enter into the new year we can do so with a little more respect for all of God’s creation which was been made for the benefit and purpose of man to develop into the Sons of God.

In Christ, Joseph
